CHAPTER 12

I didn’t sleep great that night. For the longest while I was just curled up on the bed holding a rolling pin that I’d found in the kitchen. Callie either wasn’t as bothered by the encounter or just tired, because she fell asleep pretty much the moment we got into the bedroom.

When I did finally manage to drift off, I had the strangest dreams. I was back in the big hall where we’d had the family line dance, but instead of dancing with other members of my estranged family I was in a room full of shadow people, just like the one that had attacked me at the park.

With each move and twirl the smoky figures kept trying to plunge these rusted daggers into me, and I kept trying to get away from the dance floor, but the crowd just kept pulling me back.

That dream gave way to another one, this time I was on the bandstand in the park, but it was daytime. A beautiful witch with auburn hair and a yellow sundress was standing on my right. “Don’t let it put you off, you do belong here,” she said her eyes looking out at the happy people soaking up the sun in the park. I somehow knew that she was talking about the attack.

“Do I know you?” I asked.

“I should hope so.” She looked at me and smiled. “I trusted my bookshop to you.”

My mouth dropped open. “You’re Delilah.”

“I am, don’t believe the rumors. They’re not true!” She laughed; it was a warm sound that prompted me to laugh too. “Well, most of them. Listen, Sage, I wanted to offer you some advice. You need to listen to your gut. I knew that something bad was going to happen to me, and there’s a chance I could have avoided it, if only I’d listened to that voice inside my head.”

“Why didn’t you?”

She tilted her head in consideration. “That’s a question that I keep asking myself. I honestly think I was just too preoccupied trying to help all the folks that needed me. It’s all well and good helping others, but sometimes you have to remember to help yourself too. I want you to remember that.”

“I will, thanks. I’m sorry about what happened to you.”

Delilah batted it away with a dismissive hand. “I was pretty cheesed off about it myself at the time, but I’ve had some space to think and breathe. It also helps that it’s pretty darn fun on the other side too.” She waggled her eyebrows suggestively. “I’ll just leave it at that.”

I laughed. “I wish I’d found this place earlier in my life. Things are already going wrong though. I’ve only been here one day, and someone’s already tried to hurt Callie.”

“The good thing about cat’s is that they have nine lives. I’ve been watching you Sage, and I’ve been listening carefully too. That curse you’re so worried about? It’s not real, you were just in the wrong place. I know with every drop of my soul that you’re where you’re meant to be now.
